Thursday 16th July - walk ***** – Dovercourt to Harwich pier – sunny
and hot.
As you might know I left my VHF radio I take out windsurfing at Wrabness on
Tuesday, Mag posted the loss in a few Essex Facebook pages and we got lucky
as a man out walking his dog picked it up and that was before Jason a
windsurfing mate from Mistley drove over last night as it got dark to see
if it was still on the gate ! So we messaged the man asking if we could
pick it up today and then we drove over to Wrabness hoping to windsurf
again but after a walk along the beach the wind was only 8/10 mph too light
to be bothered so we went for plan ‘B’ continue onto Dovercourt for a
walk. We had got as far as Ramsey when the radio finder messaged, he was in
and only a couple of miles away! We got the radio back and had a lovely
chat before continuing onto Dovercourt, parking for free on a large grassy
car park near the boating lake and were surprised how breeze it was here
and quickly spotted a kitesurfer out despite the tide being pretty high
meaning there was not much beach! Leaving the van in the shade of a tree we
walked the short distance to the lovely prom with waves making a big splash
as we headed towards Harwich. It is nice there with its twin towers on the
beach with loads of people out enjoying the sunny, hot weather despite 20
knots of warm wind, the kitesurfer was certainly having a great day! We
continued towards the large fort, a copy of the one at Landguard in
Felixstowe with two huge container ships berthed in the docks. Sadly the
footpath was closed so we had a make a small detour around the back of the
fort but quickly rejoined the prom as we approached Harwich with its many
lighthouses and found a bench with great views across the Orwell, sheltered
from the worst of the breeze by the two container ships and enjoyed another
top picnic being entertainer by lots of river action, first a bell tolls
warning of high tide, we saw the yellew foot ferry, the RLNI inshore boat
out with a pilot boat, a small coaster heading out with several yachts and
then a white barge came sailing past, just brilliant! Well rested we
carried onto the Half Penny pier in Harwich which is lovely, home to the
lifeboat, an old radio ship the Me Amigo and several fishing boats, we
spotted another barge moored near Shotley and the rusty lightship, then all
we had to do was walk a little over two miles back to the van but at least
we had a tail wind! The kitesurfer was still having a blast and the waves
were still crashing against the prom and we were pleased to reach the van
knackered for the 35 mile journey home! So even though I didn’t get to
windsurf we had a brilliant day in the Essex sunshine, Dovercourt and
Harwich are well worth a visit!
